Barber Instructor

About

A barber instructor is a master barber licensed to teach barbering. A barber instructor is required to attend a training program of at least 16 hours duration approved by the board every 2 years to maintain licensure.

Any person who desires a license to instruct in a school shall submit proof that they have completed a board approved instructor training course consisting of at least 300 hours and have been licensed as a master barber for at least three consecutive years. The examination shall consist of a theory examination and a practical demonstration.

Requirements

The applicant must:

  1. Be a high school graduate, evidenced by a certificate or diploma or possess a general equivalency diploma (GED(R));
  2. Hold a valid master barber license; and
  3. Complete and pass a board-approved course in instructor training of at least 300 hour; or
  4. Hold a master barber license for a minimum of 3 years.

Reinstatement
Those needing reinstatement of Tennessee Barber Instructor Licensure expired for 3 or more years, or who failed to take continued education, need to complete the reinstatement application and provide a copy of Driver’s License or birth certificate.

Reciprocity
Any licensee from another state or U.S. territory must complete an application for reciprocity. Only reciprocal applicants who meet the minimum Tennessee requirements for licensure will be considered.

Students who completed education outside of the United States or in an out of state school, college or university, and have never been issued a license need to complete an application to test and provide the following:

  • Copy of certified High School transcript, or GED
  • Copy of Driver’s License or birth certificate
  • Copy of Social Security card
  • Certified Transcript of education
