Land Surveyor

About

Land Surveyor means a person who is engaged in the practice of land surveying.

Practice of land surveying means any service of work, the adequate performance of which involves the application of special knowledge of the principles of mathematics, the related physical and applied sciences and the relevant requirements of law for adequate evidence to the act of measuring and locating lines, angles, elevations, natural and man-made features in the air, on the surface of the earth, within underground workings and on the beds of bodies of water for the purpose of determining areas and volumes, for the monumenting of property boundaries and for the platting and layout of lands and subdivisions of land, including the topography, drainage, alignment and grades of streets, and for the preparation and perpetuation of maps, records, plats, field notes, records and property descriptions that represent these surveys.

 

Requirements

You are required to submit the following with your Professional Land-Surveyor-in-Training (PLSIT) application:

1. A $25 application licensure fee

2. Proof of Education: A copy of your high school diploma or GED certificate; or a copy of an associate’s degree transcript along with a completed course reporting form; or a copy of a bachelor’s degree transcript along with a completed course reporting form.

3. Proof of 4 years of progressive practical experience, 2 years of which shall have been under the direct supervision of a practicing professional land surveyor; or proof of 10 years of progressive practical experience satisfactory to the board, 6 years of which shall have been under the direct supervision of a practicing professional land surveyor.

4. Three character references, one of whom is a professional land surveyor.

You are required to submit the following with your Professional Land Surveyor license application:

1. A $200 application licensure fee

2. A passport quality photo taken within the last 12 months

3. 5 character references, 3 who are professional land surveyors or individuals acceptable to the board who have personal knowledge of the applicant's land surveying experience.

4. Proof of education: A copy of a high school diploma or GED certificate; or a copy of an associate’s degree transcript along with a completed course reporting form; or a copy of a bachelor’s degree transcript along with a completed course reporting form.

5. Completed experience verification form

6. Out of state verification of licensure/examination form if licensed in another state.

7. Two boundary survey plats prepared by the applicant that meet Tennessee standards of practice accompanied by a property description of each survey, also written by the applicant.

Additional

The mission of the Tennessee Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors is to serve the citizens of Tennessee by efficiently and effectively providing a fair, flexible, and positive regulatory environment for consumer service industries.

The PLSIT Examination must be passed prior to application for full licensure.

Grace Period:

The grace period for your license is 1 year. When you renew during the grace period you are charged a late fee of $20 per month.

After grace period must send in an email requesting reinstatement of license. Then will have to reapply for license and fulfill all of the requirements for initial license.

Continuing Education: How many education hours do I need?

30 PDH hours - 2 of those hours being in ethics & standards of practice

Continuing Education: How do I check status of my education?

Registrants are required to maintain records of their continuing education.
